Snow?

Jenn: “Hey Evren, come over here and look! Look outside! Look at Ms. Ollie’s house across the street – what do you see on her roof there?! Look at her roof! What is that?!”

Evren: (looking) “Paint?”

Jenn: (??) “Um, no. What color is it?”

Evren: “White.”

Jenn: “Right! So what do you think it is?”

Evren: “White paint?”

Jenn: “No…. look at all the roofs, it’s on every roof!”

Evren: (done with this game) “What is it?”

Jenn: “It’s Snow!”

Evren: “It’s not snowing! It’s raining!”

Jenn: “Alright, yes, I know it looks like it’s raining, but I promise you it’s snow.”

Evren: (not convinced he just walks away)

Last Warm Day

It’s getting cold now so the kids took advantage of what might be the last warm day of the year to mess around in the backyard yesterday afternoon. Then I made them pack up everything and store it in the garage for next year. (Not without grumbling.) The photo here was not staged (well, ok, I placed the stuffed snake so that you could tell what it was instead of wrapped 3 times around his torso) … pink fuzzy hats and bizarre, not found in nature, stuffed animals regularly complement our attire around here. This, for example, would be an entirely acceptable outfit for, say, an outing to Target.

Brawny

If this isn’t an advertisement for Brawny Paper Towels, then I don’t know what is. The two wet paper towels in this photo just came out of the washing machine! They went through the entire regular wash cycle (with extra rinse!) completely intact. I have very high standards for my paper towels, I’ll admit, but even you have to agree that’s pretty amazing.

If You Think Your Commute Is Bad…

Last night my brother Dave (Unkle Dave around here) had THE WORST COMMUTE EVER on his way home from work. He left work at 5:10pm and arrived home at 2:10am. NINE HOURS. His average commute during rush hour is one hour and without traffic it takes him 30 minutes. He didn’t go into work today, needless to say. Here are some excerpts from his e-mails about the ordeal…

“…People were slipping, sliding and getting stuck like crazy on the freeway last night. It was kind of like scenes from an apocalyptic movie or something – people abandoning their cars, both on the side of the road and right in the middle of the freeway, walking who knows where because there’s nothing along the sides of that stretch of freeway – tow trucks everywhere (didn’t see many troopers, just a couple) – everyone else having to drive around the abandoned cars. It is completely ridiculous that the freeway backups were that bad – yeah there was snow, and eventually ice, and accidents, but 9 hours to go 21 miles? Actually, more like 8.5 hours to go all of 5 miles. There were other backups around the area that were almost as bad. Shouldn’t there be better plans in place for times like this? After about Hour 5 I kind of zoned out, went on autopilot. Tara stayed up, we called each other several times. When I got home, Tara met me halfway up the hill with a peanut butter sandwich, since I hadn’t had anything to eat. Before I left work I grabbed a couple little packages of snack cookies and a bottle of water – and also filled up my gas tank since it was just below a quarter tank – I’m glad [I did]. …”

Obviously he lives in an area that isn’t used to this kind of weather, but COME ON.

We’re glad you’re safe Unkle Dave.

Garage Door

The spring on our garage door snapped this morning – and thank goodness, because I was wondering how I was going to spend my day and was wishing I had something extra to worry about! As it turns out, we had a garage door guy who came out for another issue about a year and a half ago so I called him first thing. He wasn’t there and I patiently waited until noon before cracking open the phone book. This one guy had a great ad, so I called him. He gave me a quote over the phone, was at my house in less than an hour, actually came EARLIER than he quoted, and was done with the whole thing by 1:35pm. AND he charged me what he quoted. He’s a one man operation, in business for a long time and seems to really know his way around a garage door. If you ever need a “garage door guy” contact me and I’ll give you his number.

Big Heads

British scientists have just published their latest findings from a study that plots the head size of more than 600 babies, at birth…and they have confirmed a link between head size and intelligence. Ahhhhhh……yes. Of course! This would explain why my kids are both genius. Just ask their grandma, she’ll confirm.

Blueberry

We thought Blueberry, Ayla’s fish, was a goner yesterday. But, as it turns out, I just feed him too much and he doesn’t eat most of his food and the water was getting cloudy. It wasn’t nasty or anything, but I guess it was enough to deprive him of oxygen (that was an independent 3rd party’s opinion, anyway). He was listless all day, kind of just hanging there, not moving. So, I changed his water and he was revived! Evren’s fish Baby Shark is not as wussy – it takes me a good 5 minutes to chase him around his bowl with the net to get him out of there to change his water – ok, probably not 5 whole minutes, but he definitely puts up a fight which is annoying. But they are cute and we love them.

Santa

Ayla: “Mom? Is Santa real?”

Jenn: “Why do you ask that?”

Ayla: “Some of the kids at school say that Santa isn’t real and that it’s only the parents doing it.”

Jenn: “Do you want to believe in Santa?”

Ayla: “Yes.”

Jenn: “Alright then.”

Thanksgiving

Our Thanksgiving Day went as planned and the kids had a great day (well, that WAS the plan, for the kids to have fun!) The first order of business was a trip to Krispy Kreme where we ended up with way too many donuts because I had a coupon. Plus I really, really wanted that Krispy Kreme ornament for my tree and I needed a newspaper, of course! After donuts, we popped our huge 20-pounder in the oven about 9:30am and then it was a cooking and cleaning frenzy after that. Our guests were due to arrive anytime after 1pm and the kids were very anxious so they decided to just camp out on the front walk and wait. We ate in the afternoon and no one was allowed to get up from the table until they were actually groaning or had to unbutton their pants. We had all the traditional dishes, so it was basically a plate full of starches topped off by pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and piles of whipped cream. Yum!
