This is what I’m currently reading:
IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick
I’m only about a quarter of the way through, but it is completely riveting. And is why I’m dragging ass today because I couldn’t put it down last night. I love a good tale of tragic history.
Here’s what it says on the back cover:
“In his riveting and critically acclaimed bestseller, Nathaniel Philbrick returns an epic tale – the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick – to its rightful place in American History.
In 1819, the 238-ton Essex set sail from Nantucket on a routine voyage to hunt whales. Fifteen months later, the unthinkable happened: in the farthest reaches of the South Pacific, the Essex was rammed and sunk by an enraged sperm whale. Fearing cannibals on the islands to the west, the 20-man crew set out in three small boats for South American, almost 3,000 miles away. Three months later, only eight were left alive…[gruesome details inserted here you’ll have to read the book to find out about]… In the Heart of the Sea shares a fantastic saga of survival and adventure, steeped in the lore of the whaling tradition, with deep resonance in literature and American history, and in the life of the Nantucket community.”
This book was a New York Times Bestseller and a National Book Award Winner.
Eerie and spellbinding is what it is.
UPDATE: Finished it, it was a really, really good book and I would highly recommend it to everyone. 5 Stars definitely.
