Future President

Around the dinner table tonight, Ayla brought up the topic of presidential terms – I think her question was “When a president is elected, how long is he president for?”  I was baffled that she was already in 2nd grade and didn’t yet know the answer to this.  Heh.  I’m not sure how it popped into her head, but a nice, civilized discussion began.  Totally appropriate for dinner time plus a learning opportunity as well.  A couple of minutes into it, Evren had his own pressing question he needed answered, and it seemed to be important.  Important enough to interrupt by shouting…. (he hates when the attention is on Ayla) …

“MOM!  Hey Mom!”

“What?  What is it?”

“If you take out your brain, will your head pop?!”

“MOM!  MOM!  MOM!  MOM!  LOOK WHAT I MADE!  COME LOOK!  LOOK!  MOM!  MOM!”

“Super cool, buddy, what is it?”

“It’s a Smasher Fenga Three-Thousand.”

“Wow.  I am very impressed.”

(Seriously.  I was very impressed.)

Snap, Push & Pop!

Click here (or don’t) for a link that will let you view the commercial I hate.  This commercial, which obviously Evren has seen, led to this actual conversation that popped up out of the blue while we were walking around Target today…

Evren: “Hey Mom, do you need a bedazzler?”

Jenn:  (WTF? did he just say what I think he said?!?)

Evren:  “MOM!!!  STOP LAUGHING!!  MOM, DO YOU NEED A BEDAZZLER?  CAN WE BUY A BEDAZZLER?!?!!!!”

Jenn:  “I’m sorry honey, you’re right, it’s not funny.  No, we don’t need a bedazzler.”

Evren:  “BUT MOM!  You can put pretty sparkly things on ANYTHING!”

Good point you’ve got there my son, but the answer is still no.

Meteors

This was thrown at me today at lunchtime…

Evren (out of the blue): “Mom?  Why are there meteors in space?”

Jenn:  “Er…., well, um….”

Evren: “Mom, how do they get there?  Where do they come from?”

Jenn:  (think, think, middle school science, COME ON!)  “well, let’s see…”

Evren:  “Maybe they come from the planet Earth.”

Jenn:  “May – be.”

I blame PBS for making me look like an idiot.  Where the heck did he learn about meteors?  Ayla maybe?  She came home from school yesterday singing Christmas songs with revised lyrics involving smelly body parts and rubbing poison ivy on your neighbor’s butt (don’t ask) which sent Evren into hysterics every. single. time. so I’m not sure I can imagine them having a sit down chat about astronomy.

The Best Gift

Note: Ayla’s teacher said she was very touched by this story that Ayla wrote. The assignment was to write a story about the greatest gift you received and most of the children wrote about their favorite toy.

LOVE

One day I was having a snowball fight. I was very wiped out. Then I decided to build a snowfort. It was exasting. I wanted to build a snowman. But it melted. It was chilly. So I made way for home.

It’s Christmas! I shouted. I couldn’t wait to open all the presents. They were wonderful! I just startd to open presents. I got a locket, purse, 10$, ATM machine and a new puppy! Her name was Snickers. There was one more present. I bent down but I didn’t see anything. Mom gave me a big kiss. Then I realized that love is the most important gift.

Dry

Dry, A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs, the New York Times Bestselling Author of Running with Scissors.

Finished it yesterday.  Excellent book.  Highly recommend.

I’m too lazy to come up with my own brilliant synopsis so I’ll just quote Carolyn See from the Washington Post, “The most amazing book…Hilarious, freaky-deaky, berserk, controlled, transcendent, touching, affectionate, vengeful, all-embracing.  It makes you happy that there’s such a thing in the world as a string of written words…”

Though a lovely, charming story it is not.

On the Cusp of Everything

To Evren, 8:37 am this morning, “No, it is not time for glittery lip gloss, give that back to me.”

Yesterday was my baby girl’s 8th birthday and we had her birthday party after school.  Holy moly, what a day.  We are all recovering from the icing overdose.

The party was a huge success, everyone had a blast and Ayla got tons of really great presents.

I have a really big mess in the kitchen (where the presents & cake landed last night) to clean up.

Important Question

Last night, Evren was all tucked in. Cozy and sleepy.  He always has one last thing to say or ask.  Always.  Usually it’s asking for a drink of water but sometimes it’s as random as reminding me that we need to paint his room.  Last night, it was this gem…

“Mom?  Do I have pants on?”

“Yes, sweetie.  You have your pajama pants on.  Don’t worry.”

“Oh, ok.  Goodnight.”

The Essex

This is what I’m currently reading:

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick

I’m only about a quarter of the way through, but it is completely riveting.  And is why I’m dragging ass today because I couldn’t put it down last night.  I love a good tale of tragic history.

Here’s what it says on the back cover:

“In his riveting and critically acclaimed bestseller, Nathaniel Philbrick returns an epic tale – the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick – to its rightful place in American History.

In 1819, the 238-ton Essex set sail from Nantucket on a routine voyage to hunt whales.  Fifteen months later, the unthinkable happened: in the farthest reaches of the South Pacific, the Essex was rammed and sunk by an enraged sperm whale.  Fearing cannibals on the islands to the west, the 20-man crew set out in three small boats for South American, almost 3,000 miles away.  Three months later, only eight were left alive…[gruesome details inserted here you’ll have to read the book to find out about]…  In the Heart of the Sea shares a fantastic saga of survival and adventure, steeped in the lore of the whaling tradition, with deep resonance in literature and American history, and in the life of the Nantucket community.”

This book was a New York Times Bestseller and a National Book Award Winner.

Eerie and spellbinding is what it is.

UPDATE:  Finished it, it was a really, really good book and I would highly recommend it to everyone.  5 Stars definitely.

Spam

We set up a teeny computer station for Ayla in the loft – where any of us can see the screen AT ANY TIME.  Many an hour are spent here playing taking care of her Neopets.

Ayla just checked her e-mail on the advice of her Aunt Tara and lo, her Aunt Tara has sent her a lovely ditty involving the words ‘beans’ and ‘fart’ (thank you so very much) which Ayla has already set to her own music and is forcing her brother to listen to her sing it over and over again.

Then, just now, Ayla leaned over the railing from upstairs and yelled, “HEY MOM!  I just got an e-mail that says I can win an X-Box!!”  Ho-ly crap.  DELETE!  I yelled at her.

In unrelated cuteness…
In the car this morning, Ayla was telling a story about her friend Emily who will be going to the new elementary school when it opens (etc.) when Evren jumped in with his own story of his own Emily.  Ayla politely (at first) tried to explain that there is more than one Emily in the world and in fact “there are thousands.”  Evren responded with, “NO!!!  THERE IS ONLY ONE EMILY!!!!”

So, Emily, sweetie, you are the only one.  We shall never talk of another Emily in this house again.
