Uh, yeah… I have no idea why this book is on the bestseller list. The story was cute and sweet, sure, but the undertones and main message were very unsophisticated. Every once in awhile I would come across a great quote or paragraph that made me pause – for example, my favorite line from the book was, “Death doesn’t change anything, the boy thought.” But the author repeated the same phrases, ideas and thoughts over and over and over so many times, it became condescending to a point. It was hardly a fantastic book, and after halfway, it was nearly torturous to finish. I knew it was popular and wanted to finish just to make sure I didn’t miss some amazing turn in the plot or wow moment in the philosophy, but was disappointed. I think this is one of those love it or hate it books, and I didn’t love it.
Note: if you do read it anyway, make sure to read the interview with the author at the end at some point. It will give you some good insight into his personal ideals and thought process.
