Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris

This isn’t a book I would’ve picked up and read on my own, but someone suggested I read it, and I’m always up for that. (Thanks J!) And once again (is it just me?!) this falls into the category of “Tell me again how on earth this made it to the bestseller list?!”
Arrogant, self-righteous and pretentious – I hated it. And my religious views have absolutely nothing to do with why I disliked this book so much. Sam Harris addresses a portion of the public as if he is the smartest man on the planet and everyone else is completely stupid. Regardless of whether or not one agrees with his point of view, I have no tolerance for the way he delivered this message.
Not to mention that he gets some things grossly wrong. For example:
The idea that Islam is a “peaceful religion hijacked by extremists” is a fantasy, and it is now a particularly dangerous fantasy for Muslims to indulge. It is not at all clear how we should proceed in our dialogue with the Muslim world, but deluding ourselves with euphemisms is not the answer. It is not a truism in foreign policy circles that real reform in the Muslim world cannot be imposed from the outside. But it is important to recognize why this is so – it is so because most Muslims are utterly deranged by their religious faith.
Oh kay, right… If I hadn’t lost all respect for him by the time I got to that passage, that certainly put me over the edge. Idiot.
All that being said, I don’t regret I read it. Sometimes I need to be forced to read things I wouldn’t normally for the sake of learning more about this world we live in.

You are easy going and naturally happy. You don’t need a lot to make you smile. You genuinely care about people and are a great friend. You’re always doing your best to make the world a better place. Even though there isn’t an immature bone in your body, you still are like a big kid sometimes. Why make life complicated when the best parts are actually quite simple? You enjoy the small joys of life.

So, in a follow up to this previous post, I did watch the movie and…
Ya know?? Nearly perfect adaptation from book to screenplay! They only changed one tiny thing, which I hated (but I won’t give away) but otherwise it was such a great translation of the book to the screen, and I was truly impressed with that aspect. However, that being said, since was exactly like the book… it was everything I said the book was. Disgusting, boring, too long, tedious….
Yesterday they had Art Day at the kids’ school, and it was crazy, to say the least. Here are the pics I took with my phone at the event. I wish I had more of Ayla but she ran off with her friend, and it was just Evren and I hanging out most of the time.

You may seem quick to criticize or correct, but you think accuracy and truth is important. You like to be involved in every project. You feel like you put the polishing touch on things. You would make a good editor, detective, or accountant. When facts matter, you’re the person to call on. |
