Reading: Into the Wild

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

Into the Wild

I have strong, mixed emotions about this book.  As I was reading, for most of the book, I felt very strongly that I did not like this book.  At all.  (Of course I kept reading, there was a certain pull to it.)  But, I now realize that even though I was so adament in my distaste for this story, it was really making me think.  More so perhaps than any other book I’ve read recently.  Then, the last few chapters and the epilogue brought to light some ideas and revelations that made me look at the story in a new light.  I was more forgiving, more respectful.  I felt satisfied and I felt the author had given proper closure, and for that I was thankful.

I have read the other two books this author has written, and his writing style is unique, unedited and circular.  It’s distracting and tedious, but intelligent and extremely well-researched.  With no ill respect to the family of this young man, I don’t think his life story should have been glorified in a book and movie.  I think the author idolized him in a sense, and parts of the book were autobiographical in nature, and not always objective.

I did very much enjoy the exerpts and passages the author posted at the beginning of every chapter – they were very appropriate and thought-provoking.  I don’t know if I would recommend this book to anyone, but if you do begin this book, please finish it, you will be so glad you did.

(C – please don’t stop recommending books to me, I appreciate you so much.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this book sometime.  M – finish it!)

Watching: Into the Wild

Into the Wild

Into the Wild

Unless this movie is somehow calling to you, don’t watch it. In my opinion it was awful. If you really want to know the story of this young man, then read the book.

Being Human on BBC America

Being Human

A werewolf, a ghost and a  vampire become friends and all live in the same house.  Brilliant!!

Series 1 has wrapped up (only 6 episodes) and they are working on Series 2.  Highly recommend.

Power Point Karaoke

This looks really fun!

Power Point Karaoke

Imagine this:  You have to deliver a PowerPoint presentation about an unfamiliar topic, with slides you’ve never seen, to an audience eager to heckle and laugh at you.  If you’re in your underwear, you’re having a nightmare.  If you’re clothed, it’s called PowerPoint Karaoke.

Spaghetti with Sweet Sausage and Cabbage

I made this for dinner tonight and it turned out fantastic!! Even the kids devoured it. I hope the leftovers are just as good, because it makes a huge batch.

Spaghetti with Sweet Sausage and Cabbage from Martha Stewart Everyday Food

Spaghetti

Ingredients

Serves 4

  • Coarse salt and ground pepper
  • 8 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 pound sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 large red onion, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1 head Savoy or green cabbage (about 2 pounds), halved, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon white-wine vinegar

Directions

  1. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente. Reserve 1 cup pasta water; drain pasta, and return to pot. Set aside.
  2. While pasta is cooking, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high. Add sausage; cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes. With a slotted spoon, transfer sausage to a plate; set aside (reserve skillet with rendered fat).
  3. To skillet, add onion, 2 tablespoons water, and as much cabbage as will fit; season with salt and pepper. Cover; cook until tender, tossing occasionally and adding more cabbage as space becomes available, 6 to 10 minutes.
  4. To pasta, add cabbage mixture and sausage. Toss with enough pasta water to create a sauce. Season with salt and pepper, and stir in vinegar.

I just realized that I completely forgot the vinegar.  And I did add a couple of tablespoons of butter to the pasta.  It just seemed wrong not to.

#3 Blog More

#3 Make 3 New Posts Every Day for 30 Days and Analyze Results of Blog Stats – DONE

For the month of August I joined NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) and made the commitment to blog at least once per day. And I did it! Not only that, but I blogged three times per day for the entire month. I wanted to see if it had a significant impact on my stats – to see if it was as simple as blogging more = more visitors.

Here is a look at my stat graph showing visitors per week.

Stats

So, there definitely was a positive trend in the last several weeks, but it wasn’t huge.   And it’s exhausting to blog three times a day!  But it’s always fun.

#80 Magazines

#80 Subscribe To 3 Magazines I Want – DONE

I love magazines, but my budget has forced me to cut down on this addiction.  My magazine subscriptions dwindled as I didn’t renew, and I resist the urge to pick up a 4 dollar copy, alluring as it may be, from the check-out line.

Last year I paid off one of my credit cards, but didn’t cancel the account (as is advised) and recently discovered I had a nice sum of thank-you points in some forgotten account from that credit card.  And, there was exactly enough points to get 3 magazine subscriptions!  For free!

I picked…
