Don’t Sleep, There Are Snakes by Daniel L. Everett, Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle
David Everett went to the Amazon jungle as a missionary with his wife and three very young children in hopes of converting this particular tribe to Christianity. What he didn’t know was that missionaries has been attempting to convert this tribe, unsuccessfully, for 200 years.
Eventually becoming a linguist, this book has entire chapters devoted to analyzing the language of this tribe, which in my opinion is probably only interesting to a handful of people. There were times when this book made me quite upset as he described his behavior, but reading about this culture was fascinating.
