Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult
This book was written with the specific intention to be a book club book. I’m not sure if that is brilliant or a dirty trick. Well written, dramatic and easy to read, as always with Jodi Picoult. The story was unusual with the characters making very poor decisions at every turn to warrant wonderful book club discussions ..”how did you feel when she did this?”… “how would you react if your husband did that?”…”do you judge her for behaving that way?” …and you get the picture. And then? It just so happens, the main character is a baker so naturally (!) a recipe can be inserted in between every chapter. Fun! The book club hostess can make some of those recipes when she has the group over to her house! Ugh. Yeah, I’m in the middle of a highly tense medical drama and I’m going to take a break after every chapter to read the next recipe. Transparent.
I did learn something new about a medical condition I knew little about before but that was pretty much the only take-away here. And who knows how much of that was accurate.

You and I had a similar take on this book. I made the mistake of reading it last fall when Machen was in the hospital. Never a good idea to read Jodi Picoult while dealing with your own medical dramas!
