Non-stop birthday day fun, for Evren who turned five.
First stop: Krispy Kreme. We were on our way to the toy store, and needed some sugar. And they were warm!

I let Evren pick “a small toy” (mistake) and it seemed like we would NEVER get out of there.

He couldn’t make up his mind to save his life.

He finally did decide, and by then we were all starving. He got to choose where we went to lunch and he picked Burger King because “You never take us there Mommy.”

Burger, fries and lemonade slushie.
THEN, PARTY!
All his very best friends showed up and it was fabulous.

Talk about an ugly cake, I know, but it was surprisingly good!

LOVED all his presents!!

THEN, (oh yes, there’s more)…
BUILD-A-BEAR

He named this little guy “FurJoe”.
Then, dinner, his choice, a hot dog from Sonic.

He was a great sport about the first 150 or so photos I took that day, but I think this was a hint that he just wanted to finish his dinner in peace.
Anyway… it was a great day and we are still cleaning up the aftermath. I have tons more pics and if you are interested I can send you the snapfish link - just email me.
Next stop…. Kindgergarten.

Definition: Lack of appropriate seriousness.
I learned a new word yesterday when someone told me, “Your levity is encouraging.” And I said, “umm… hold on one second while I look that up.” Then when I read the definition I was laughing out loud and said, “oh, you should read my blog!”

Cold Mountain

My girlfriend Michelle started reading Cold Mountain recently so I decided to read it again too, with her.
(That’s right Michelle, I did just post your photo on the internet.)
The book is a bit tedious to start but is an absolutely beautiful story, that I would highly recommend reading, if you haven’t already. The movie is one of the better adaptations of a novel I’ve seen, with very little discrepancies between the book and the movie.

Thanks Michelle!

My darling friends in Germany sent me an email way back <wait, let me look….> on March 26th (!) to which I am finally now responding. They lovingly referred to it “like a chain letter for bloggers.” Nice…
But, what the hell, I’ll play along, mostly because they are nice. :-)
In Germany it’s called throwing a little stick. The rules for this little stick they threw at me are:
1. Put a link to the person who threw the stick at you. [see above]
2. Mention the corresponding rules in your blog. [doing that now]
3. Tell everyone six unimportant things/habits/obsessions about you. [posted below]
4. Pass this stick to six other bloggers by linking them. [will do that after I do number 3]
5. Leave a comment at each person you choose to inform them that they are tagged. [will do that later]
Okay, how many? Six? Hmmm…. let’s see…. I’m going to use unimportant as the key word here…
1. At approximately 3:30pm every work day I must have caffeine and chocolate.
2. I hate wearing layers.
3. I am obsessed with keeping my fridge/freezer neat. (All labels facing forward please.)
4. I wear flip-flops for about 4 months straight in the summer.
5. I’m the only person I know that still buys music CDs at the store.
6. My favorite kind of weather is when it gets really dark right before a big storm.
Will tag some of my friends already linked here - will go leave them a comment now.
Have a great weekend!!

Found this gem in my Inbox today - thanks Christine!
As I’ve Matured…
I’ve learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in…
I’ve learned that one good turn gets most of the blankets.
I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just jackasses.
I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.
I’ve learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.
I’ve learned that you shouldn’t compare yourself to others - they are more screwed up than you think.
I’ve learned that depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
I’ve learned that it is not what you wear; it is how you take it off.
I’ve learned that you can keep vomiting long after you think you’re finished.
I’ve learned to not sweat the petty things, and not pet the sweaty things.
I’ve learned age is a very high price to pay for maturity.
I’ve learned that I don’t suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.
I’ve learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.
I’ve learned that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
I’ve learned that 99% of the time when something isn’t working in your house, one of your kids did it.
I’ve learned that there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

It took 2 months to get here but …yea! A package from our friends in Germany! I’m just wondering ….how did they know we like candy?!

And, in fact, some items are missing from the photo because we couldn’t be bothered to stop eating the candy in order to take a photo.
THANK YOU!!

Chris, a frequent commenter on my site, and quite possibly the only one not related to me, dared me to mail him the Spotted Dick that my cousin Melissa mailed to me. She came across it in the grocery store one day and as the story goes, immediately thought, “Oh my god, I have to buy that and mail it to Jenn!”
The bigger deal is that Chris lives in Germany with his super sweet wife Sabine and extremely cute son, Finn. So, I took his dare and decided to surprise him with not only the Spotted Dick, but the best package ever from some random person he’s never met. So, I threw a bunch of stuff in a box (including lollipops for Finn and some of my favorite music) and sent the package on its way.
And, it came back.
I didn’t feel appropriate cursing the German postal system, but he did a good job of that for me. And, yea, ok, it would’ve helped if I spelled the street name correctly.
So, it sat on my desk for a few months while I ignored it.
Then I mailed it again…
…and my Spotted Dick is now on the other side of the world.

With friends we took the little ones to the Sculpture Garden for a field trip and I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, once I took Evren to a wildlife rescue center where we were super close up to amazing animals like white tigers and lions and he could’ve cared less. He played with the plastic lounge chairs at the yard the entire time. So, sculpture? Eh, all his friends were going, so I took a chance.
And they all loved it! They had their little brochures and went from sculpture to sculpture, asking what the name was, trying to find it on their map, asking questions - it was amazing. And totally worth it.
Here are some highlights…

Got this e-mail today from Sarah, with this photo…
Hobby Lobby. The first time I checked out your blog, it featured a bunch of sweets. Mainly, cupcakes. Love at first sight?

Love them! Thanks for randomly thinking of me Sarah! It made my day!
