Advent Calendar Day 22: Make gingerbread houses
Wondering: How has the myth that doing this as a family activity is easy, fun and rewarding for all perpetuated for so long???
Here’s what the “in-progress” really looks like:
We are crafty, we bake, but this? Not so much. I will probably conveniently forget to add this activity to the advent calendar next year.

We just ate the rest of the gumdrops and most of the gingerbread men are half-naked.
Bored on the weekend? Craving adventure? In the mood for something exotic?
Go to the Asian World Market on a Saturday. You will not be disappointed.
We went looking for cinnamon sticks and cloves in bulk, which we found. Evren wanted some dragon fruit, which we couldn’t find (out of season?) and Ayla wanted some dried seaweed to snack on (no I’m not kidding), which we did find. In fact, there was an entire aisle of seaweed – so that was fun, trying to figure out what flavor was what. We also bought ramune and bags of pumpkin seeds.
Out of the mouth of the child buying seaweed… OH. MY. GOD. MOM! MOM! Did you see what that lady had in her cart?! A. FISH. HEAD. Just a fish head, wrapped up. Gross!
Advent Calendar Day 11: Bake Christmas treats to give to friends and teachers
I attempted to make Hershey’s Candy Cane Blossoms that allegedly are supposed to look like this:
mmmm… yea… ours looked like this…
I ended up just swirling the melting Hershey kiss to look like a peppermint and my colored sugar was not nearly as vibrant as it could’ve been…but I thought they looked cute all packaged up anyway.
We also made my favorite Holiday Pretzel Treats that are always a hit.
